When it comes to materials, there are few I love more than velvet. It is the ultimate luxury fabric, the epitome of glamour! Now over the years, I have owned many a velvet dress, but they tended to be black. So when I spied this red velvet dress on a recent trip to the Collectif clothing shop in Brighton, I knew it would be perfect to purchase for my birthday. When it finally arrived last week, I quickly grabbed Sarah for an after work photo shoot in Trafalgar Square, because honestly this dress had to be documented!
The Corinne Velvet Swing Dress is a beautiful red velvet dress, with long sleeves, a gathered sweetheart neckline, and a back zip. The gathered bust detail can be pulled to lower the front, and give you more oomph, with a string inside. The material is a stretch velvet, which is handy as I don’t need to unzip to pull it on and makes it more comfortable for the 5 hours or I so I was wearing it. However with all velvet, it was very warm, which for me was slightly unpleasant, and I think a 3/4 length sleeve would have fixed this.
On to sizing! Now Collectif can be a bit funny when it comes to sizing, they tend to err on the size of small…especially if you are busty. I try not to let this bother me too much, as I am more interested in being comfortable than a clothing tag. I bought this dress in a 20, and while I am normally a 16/18 in most clothing, as I aforementioned, reproduction clothing tends to run small, and Collectif is no exception. I would be wary of the size chart, and while the fabric being 95% polyester and 5% spandex does add stretch, I would still err on the larger end. As a very busty gal, I did find the neckline slightly inappropriate had I not been going out in the evening, it showed far more cleavage than I am comfortable doing on the day to day.
Overall, this dress is gorgeous, the deep wine red, and gathered neckline gave me huge Tudor harlot vibes, and I had many compliments, and a few turned heads (but this may have been down to boobs.) This will definitely be a dress that I pull out for special occasions and when I want to make a statement! The dress comes in at £69.50 so if you’re looking for an outfit to turn heads, or for a special occasion, grab the tape measure and get online!
